Essential nutrients for autism spectrum disorder

Below is an article that I found to be very thorough in explaining what is going on with my children.  It really sums up the whole autism spectrum in terms of deficiencies that are consistently seen with these children.  And please be aware that a child doesn't have to be on the spectrum to have these deficiencies, as illnesses like ADHD and learning disabilities are just a less severely effected individual.

I will bold the items that we have confirmed to be problems with Grayson, at minimum.  We have some blood work to do, now in fact, where we will actually find out which viruses (viral titers) have been mutating and actively living in him as well as to see what his oxidative stress looks like (transferrin).  You will read more about oxidative stress below, it's a huge factor for the biochemistry in children on the spectrum.

Even though you may be convinced that your child isn't on the autism spectrum, that doesn't mean these things aren't going on for him/her.  They are with my child!  It wasn't until I learned to accept literature with the word autism in it, that I opened our door to healing.

Essential nutrients for autism spectrum disorder

Rosalba Maistoru M.A., BCBA

The incidence of early-onset-type autism has not changed since it was first described by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943. At that time, the disorder was generally being diagnosed before the age of 2. Rather, it is the later-onset-type that has suddenly appeared and dramatically increased around the globe and across the country. Today’s autism spectrum disorder (ASD) children are being diagnosed at more advanced ages. Today, about 1 in 150 children are born with some kind of neurological developmental disorder. Clearly, the explosion of ASD is real, and the frightening rate of increase does not seem to be dropping off, leaving us with the responsibility to at least address what may be causing these alarming trends and what we can do about them.

While ASD presents as a complex clinical problem for many in the professional fields, parents of newly diagnosed children are baffled, because so many children on the spectrum present with coexisting medical conditions that are not explained by an ASD diagnosis. Physical illness symptomatology include ailments such as gastrointestinal problems, immune dysfunction, and/or recurrent infections. For several years now there has been a strong consensus among many scientists and practitioners that, while hereditary plays a vital role in the susceptibility for ASD, environmental factors (e.g., toxin exposures, infectious agents or other stressors) appear to contribute to the cause or triggering of ASD.

In the past, ASD has primarily been treated through educational, behavioral and psychosocial modalities. Advocates of “the new paradigm of ASD” propose that autism is not strictly an inherited disease, but that environmental factors contribute to its incidence and that dietary interventions, detoxification strategies and other medical treatments may contribute to the amelioration of ASD symptoms. One could reasonably argue that perhaps the most important reason to pursue the medical paradigm of environmental effects is the possibility of identifying underlying factors causing ASD and ultimately achieving successful treatments for those diagnosed with ASD.

Practitioners who treat children with ASD using biomedical approaches have been sharing data and several themes with abnormalities in related and overlapping areas have emerged, such as ASD and the role of oxidative stress (e.g. free radicals), immunological dysregulation and increased toxic burden (e.g., heavy metals). In addition, they have also noted that the extent of the nutritional problems in these observations include the following dietary abnormalities, such as zinc deficiency, copper excess, calcium and magnesium deficiencies, omega-3 fatty acid deficiency, fiber deficiency and antioxidant deficiency.

Toxic chemicals, at any level of chronic exposure, affect human biochemistry. Fortunately, the body has mechanisms for transforming, eliminating or sorting out many toxic chemicals encountered over a lifetime. Nonetheless, these ‘safety’ mechanisms may be inadequate or even inappropriate in our modern industrialized society, especially for “at risk” individuals, such as the elderly, those with poor nutritional habits, or children who are born with a genetic susceptibility to having trouble detoxifying.

One class of ‘textbook’ toxic chemicals capable of subtle yet insidious health effects that may mimic other disorders, especially in children, is that of the heavy metals. Lead, mercury, arsenic, aluminum and cadmium are well-documented examples. Chronic exposure to these metals often results in organ-specific accumulation, which compromises the physiology of that organ. Similarly, chronic exposure to organic chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, industrial and manufacturing byproducts can have deleterious impact on the body’s biochemistry, resulting in decline of cellular function.

New research indicates that oxidative stress and free radicals (highly reactive molecules) may play a role in the development of ASD. Free radicals are submicroscopic damaging particles that occur naturally in the body during normal metabolic functions and may also come from other sources, including environmental toxins (e.g., ultraviolet light, radiation, cigarette smoking and air pollution). These destructive molecules are inherently unstable since they contain more energy than they need. To reduce their extra energy, free radicals react with certain cells in the body. This interferes with those cells’ ability to function properly, may alter cell membranes, tamper with DNA and even cause cell death.

Chronic illness is characterized by the presence of large numbers of free radicals throughout the body. Free radicals not only damage cells but also cause viruses living in a person’s body to mutate. Poor nutrition greatly magnifies this process, generating significant more free radicals and increasing the likelihood that the live virus will mutate to a more virulent strain (which can increase the person’s exposure to a very high risk of viral persistence). A number of new studies confirm previous studies showing a strong correlation between eating fresh fruits and high density vegetables (squash, onions, garlic, greens, broccoli and Brussels sprouts) and a lower risk of developing chronic illness, with incredible protection against many diseases associated with free radical formation.

Ensuring proper biochemical functioning requires a consistent balance among various essential nutrients. Nutrients are substances that are involved in the creation of every molecule in the body. The body needs more than 45 nutrients, and the ways that nutrients are used are as varied as the molecules, cells and tissues they help to create. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats (called macronutrients) are broken down (metabolized) to give the body energy. Vitamins and minerals (called micronutrients) are not themselves metabolized for energy, but they are crucial in helping the macronutrients convert to energy. Six macrominerals are required by humans in varying amounts. Four of them (sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium) are cations, and two (phosphate and chloride) are accompanying anions. Nine trace minerals (microminerals) are required by humans in small amounts including iron, iodine, fluorine, zinc, chromium, selenium, manganese, molybdenum and copper.

Researchers and scientists continue to uncover the therapeutic role of nutritional supplements in the prevention and treatment of disease. The term “nutritional supplement” refers to vitamins, minerals, and other food components that are used to support good health and treat illness. While all vitamins and minerals play an essential role in the body’s normal metabolism, growth, and development, some are pivotal and they do this by helping the body to perform various tasks. For example, vitamins B-6 (pyridoxine), B-9 (folate) and B-12 (methylcobalamin), regulate a special series of metabolic steps in brain cells necessary for forming neurotransmitter chemicals and repairing DNA. When these nutrients are deficient, a special chemical homocysteine accumulates. Homoysteine is in a class of special brain cell toxins called excitotoxins. These toxins literally excite certain brain cells to death. Excitotoxins are considered a central mechanism in all of the neurodegenrative diseases and generate large numbers of free radicals in brain cells and brain cell connections (synapses).

Numerous studies have found that many children with ASD have elevated homocysteine levels, which is usually a sign of impaired metabolism. Many of the recent studies have also shown that the greatest risk is among those with impaired immunity. Protection against free radicals and excitotoxins can be achieved from dietary, supplemental and endogenous antioxidants. Antioxidants are intimately involved in the prevention of cellular damage - the common pathway for a variety of diseases. These molecules safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged. They neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons. The antioxidant nutrients themselves don’t become free radicals by donating an electron because they are stable in either form. Instead, they act as scavengers, helping to prevent cell and tissue damage that could lead to cellular damage and disease.

Although there are several enzyme systems within the body that scavenge free radicals, the principle antioxidants are vitamins C, E, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), N-acetyl L-cysteine (NAC) and curcumin, which increase brain cell glutathione levels. Vitamins C and E are thought to protect the body against the destructive effects of free radicals. Glutathione, one of the more powerful brain antioxidant systems, can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause. Selenium is also included in this category, a trace metal that is required for proper function of one of the body’s antioxidant enzyme systems. Additionally, the carotenoids and special antioxidants from plants called flavonoids all act together to protect the brain from free radicals and, hence, excitotoxicity.

One of the more common reasons for immune dysfunction is nutritional deficiency. It is known that even individual nutritional deficiencies can have devastating effects on the immune system, an example of this is exemplified with a deficiency in selenium which can impair cellular immunity. It is also known that vitamin E (natural E), selenium, zinc, vitamin C and flavonoids (from fruits and vegetables) are critical for normal immune function. These nutrients have been sited as common deficiencies seen in children with ASD. Severe chronic infections have been known to deplete nutrients and this worsens immune function. Immune-stimulant supplements and nutrients, such as mixed carotenoids (beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, canthoxanthin, lutein), most B vitamins, vitamins C, E, D-3, and the minerals zinc, selenium (as selenomethionine) and magnesium, taken together all support immunity.

Of the many biochemical similarities seen in ASD, one of the most defining is their limited ability to detoxify effectively. While hereditary plays a vital role in our ability to detoxify, it is now known that the most important factor is nutrition. Many flavonoids found in fruits and vegetables greatly enhance our detoxification ability. These include curcumin (from the spice turmeric), quercetin, hesperidin and luteolon. Special plant substances, such as indole-3 carbinol (broccoli), glutathione and taurine stimulate detoxification. In addition, the omega-3 fats, such as fish oil docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), also improve detoxification.

Another deficiency which appears to be particularly common in children with ASD includes DHA. This nutrient plays a particularly important role in cellular membrane function, especially mitochondrial membranes, in synaptic membranes and reduces excitotoxicity. DHA is essential for the proper functioning of our brains as adults, and for the development of our nervous system and visual abilities during the first six months of life. Lack of sufficient DHA may be associated with impaired mental and visual functioning as well as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Low levels have also been associated with depression and Alzheimer’s disease in adults. Our bodies naturally produce some DHA, but in amounts too small and irregular to ensure proper biochemical functioning.

It is important to maintain an appropriate balance of omega-3 and omega-6 (another essential fatty acid) in the diet as these two substances work together to promote health. They make up the cells in the body and play a critical role in endocrine function, brain maintenance, cell function, immune regulation and controlling inflammation. While omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation, most omega-6 fatty acids tend to promote inflammation. Of particular concern are the omega-6 oils, which are metabolized in the body to produce a powerful immune-suppressing substance (PGE2) and thus interfere with immune function. Corn, safflower, sunflower, peanut and soybean oils are all omega-6 oils. The typical American diet tends to contain 11 to 30 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids and many researchers believe this imbalance is a significant factor in the rising rate of inflammatory disorders in the United States.

There have been numerous studies showing the health-promoting effects when combining fruits and vegetables, and increased intakes of omega-3 oils. Good nutrition can dramatically improve our detoxification ability and therefore prevent many diseases from occurring. Improving detoxification is especially important for those with chronic diseases, in such cases, regular measurements of detoxification should be conducted until normal levels are attained. Some authorities also suggest that before considering supplementation, one should have comprehensive testing for nutrition deficiencies, which should include all of the major nutrients listed for nutritional guidelines and exercise.
The idea that different disease diagnoses that occur at different points in the lifespan may share some common underlying mechanisms, is gaining more support. This means that more work needs to be done not just on the behavioral overlaps between ASD and other neurological (e.g., language impairment), but also on the physiological overlaps (metabolic, biochemistry, immune system, exposure history) between ASD and other disorders. This is relevant to developing treatments.
While skeptics and objectors will continue to insist that what we are witnessing is simply a shift in diagnostic criteria, the full complexity of all environmental and heritable factors drives our understanding of the clinical, research and treatment issues. In the meantime, mounting evidence shows that most children diagnosed with ASD can be helped. Many families are discovering that with the proper biomedical and educational interventions, coupled with hard work and dedication, children are leading happier, healthier and more independent lives.

Protect them from their beds!

At 7:30 this morning when I opened my eyes, to the sound of Gavin rustling around in his bed, it hit me.  He didn't sneeze?  Not once?!  For as long as I can remember, Gavin has been sneezing the minute he opens his eyes.  His consecutive sneezy salute was always my cue that he was awake for the day, so when I heard him talking and rolling around, I was surprised that he was actually awake for the day without his usual routine.  Then something else hit me, last night was his first night on a new allergen-free pillow!  IT WAS THE PILLOW!!

I knew we needed new pillows, and I had waited too long after buying all the necessary things to protect them from their chemical-laden mattresses, but I couldn't find anything suitable.  A child's pillow needs to be washable and finding a natural, allergen-free alternative that could be washed wasn't easy.  Then one day recently, I received a daily deal newsletter from Mamapedia and it highlighted a company called CleanRest that was created by the father of a child with severe allergies, I was relieved to not only finally find pillows for our kids, but to get them at half price!!  And heck, I didn't even have to step foot outside for this purchase, it was ushered right to my computer and eventually to my front door!  For $22 (their full price) these pillows are washable, water resistant, breathable, allergen and chemical free and they carry a lifetime warranty!  How can you beat that?

So last night was our first night using them and clearly Gavin was effected by his old pillow, which I am embarrassed to say, I hadn't even thought of!

Antimony in our mattresses
When both kids had elevated antimony on their hair tests (Gavin also had very high phosphorus) I immediately knew it was their mattresses, because I already knew not to put pajamas on them that had been treated with fire retardant (AKA - antimony)....well, for all of Gavin's life anyway.  We learned from Grayson's experiences.  When Grayson's first hair test came back with elevated antimony, I stopped using those pajamas immediately, but didn't know much about the toxins in his bed.  And of all places to not address toxins, we spend nearly one third of our lives there, and infants over 50% of their lives!!

How exactly DO we protect ourselves from our beds?
If you don't have enough money to go out and buy yourself a nice cushy all natural latex mattress, and I would assume that most of us can't afford to go out and replace all the beds in our homes, then there are much less expensive ways to protect yourself from the multitude of chemicals in your mattresses.  Antimony isn't the only danger lurking in your peaceful place.  Included in the list of chemicals you are encountering nightly are: adhesives, petroleum based foams, plastics, vinyls, fungicides and pesticides.

Here is a link sharing multiple stories of people who came down with sudden ailments after buying new mattresses. Just click on "health problems from mattresses" on the left to see the stories.

In other countries like New Zealand, they have even gone as far as to prove that SIDS is the result of a baby inhaling all of these chemicals.  You can read about it and buy crib mattress wraps here.  We use this mattress cover on Gavin's crib mattress.

This is taken directly from their website
Crib death (often referred to as SIDS) is caused by gaseous poisoning, the gases being phosphine, arsine, and stibine (and/or derivative gases).  These toxic gases can be generated from the mattress where a baby sleeps.  They are formed by the action of common household fungi (e.g. Scopulariopsis brevicaulis) on  compounds of the elements phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony (respectively) within the mattress which are activated by a baby's body heat.  The crib death risk increases as a mattress is re-used from one baby to the next since mold grows exponentially.  New mattresses have been shown to begin off-gasing (releasing the toxic gases into the air) after 1 month of a baby sleeping on it.  See our Analysis page for more info about mold in bedding.

Household fungi become established in nearly every mattress which is slept on, and in underbedding (sheets/blankets slept on) which is washed infrequently.
The risk of crib death can be virtually eliminated by ensuring that babies sleep on mattresses (and other bedding) known to be free from the above elements.  The BabeSafe range of bassinet and crib mattresses complies with this specification.  All other types of crib mattress should be enclosed in a BabeSafe slip-on mattress cover.  BabeSafe is made from a thick polythene material that is 125 microns thick, it is a type of plastic but does not cause sweating.  Not just any plastic will do, only polythene (125 microns +) will prevent gases from escaping into a baby's bed.  Any other plastic is permeable to these gases and is therefore useless in preventing crib death.
Interestingly, three of the elevated heavy metals in our kids' hair tests were antimony, phosphorus and arsenic!  Not all of them were over the safe range, but they were on the high side of safe and for both, antimony was over safe!  I am not one to wait for things to get really bad to react.  I prefer to choose prevention.  This was a warning sign that my children were being poisoned by their beds.

For $28 you can encapsulate a twin mattress with food grade polyethylene just like the crib mattress covers above.  They also carry larger sizes.

Once we covered their mattresses, we needed something to put over the plastic so they wouldn't feel the crunching below them and of course, those water resistant mattress covers you buy in the stores are also treated with chemicals as well as containing many harmful materials such as PVC, pthalates and and more.  I found an organic 100% cotton mattress cover for each other their beds and topped that with 100% organic cotton sheets.  Remember that each child needs at least two of the mattress pads and sheets, in case of the inevitable midnight accident.  When one is in the wash, the other is on the bed.

In closing, just imagine this, the average child is surrounded in a chemical-laden haven every night with their mattresses, mattress pads, sheets, pillows and pajamas....for much of their life.  I see no better way to spend my money than to eliminate these toxins from my child's life!

And just for the record, since replacing Grayson's bedding and chelating with DMSA (which removes antimony in addition to mercury and lead), his Antimony levels have not only come down to the normal range, but they have come down even below that!

Have we evolved too much?

Is there such a thing as too much evlolution for a species?  I think we had it right at one point, we were cleaning up our water and food, and this increased our life expectancies.  Disease was already on the decline, but we had to take it all a step further.  Or was that too many steps?

My husband saw an article recently suggesting that this will be the first year in a long time that a generation's life expectancies are shorter than our parent's!

I am going to go out on a limb and just for the sake of experimenting with this theory, let's think completely out of the box and use body odor as an example.  We all know that we excrete toxins through our skin, creating body odor, but what is the possibility that this was a form of communication at one time?  I mean, we already know that dogs can sense fear pheromones in humans, right?  Everything our body does has a purpose, some perhaps that we don't even know since we can't even consider everything we could be testing for.

Could our instincts and genetics have had more control in our destiny than we can even fathom with our brainwashed ideas?  Have you ever noticed that one person's body odor might be offensive to you, while another person's was almost appealing?  Why is that?  Stop and think about it without inhibition and think of the raw potential purpose for this.  Could our instincts have driven us to be attracted to those who are genetically in tune with each other?  We have so many "genetic" mutations occurring and yes, I do think the environment is very much involved, but we have to have these predisposed "genetics" to begin with and where did they get out of control?  What if deodorant squelched our opportunity at using a sense that had more sense than our conscious mind?  Could this one little itty bitty change in our lives have made a huge impact on our ability to know who our perfect matches might be?  and to go as far as to say even genetically so?  Ok, so you get my point, I am not suggesting we go back to cave-man days and start sniffing each other out, but we SHOULD be putting more thought into our own actions, because everything we do will effect the next seven generations, or more. Somewhere along the way, we got it wrong.  We are shorting ourselves somewhere.  Our greed has taken over, we are creating toxins and chemicals faster than we can even test for them, what does that tell you?  Our waters are polluted, our rain is tainted with heavy metals, our homes are made with toxic materials and our children are being born with more than 200 of these toxins already in their blood....evolution?  What do you think?

Sure, all these new inventions often provide us with more comfort and convenience, but at what price?

Guest blogger

I recently met a wonderful fellow-mom through Grayson's school.  She and I connected partly because our children go to the same school, but even more profoundly, we connected because her two daughters have illnesses that I felt could be helped with biomedicine, autism and down syndrome.  She asked me to be a guest-blogger on her blog called Mom-Blog and I was too happy to oblige.  You can see my post here.

Bio medicine, just for the autistic?

I'd like to talk a little bit about bio medicine and something that tends to confuse many parents. Right now, much of the biomedical research being done is on the ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) community and the results achieved with biomedical treatments. Why is that? Probably because they are the most effected and we are reversing what was once considered a purely genetic and irreversible condition known as autism. But do I think these are the only people who would benefit from bio medicine? Absolutely not! We are seeing more and more research on bio medicine effecting those with autoimmune disorders like Lupus and Arthritis, Lyme Disease, and they are even reversing cancer! The rise of ASDs is an epidemic, so it's drawing attention and rightfully so. Twenty or so years ago, ASD afflicted 1 in 10,000 kids. Now? 1 in ONE HUNDRED at best! In the UK, it's 1 in 60!

So what is bio medicine, you ask? Well, let's dissect the word, it pretty much makes sense....bio, like biology and medicine, hmmm, ok so here is the medical definition:

bi·o·med·i·cine
(bīˌō-mĕdˈĭ-sĭn)
noun
  1. The branch of medical science that deals with the ability of humans to tolerate environmental stresses and variations, as in space travel.
  2. The application of the principles of the natural sciences, especially biology and physiology, to clinical medicine.
So we are treating illnesses with nature, it's that simple. Anyone, wait no, EVERYONE can benefit from that.

Where we seem to get hung up, as parents, is hearing the term autism used in conjunction with this form of treatment. We conclude that, if we need to use bio medicine to help ourselves or our kids, it MUST mean they are autistic, right? WRONG! I think the only reason we see this connection is, because this disorder is single-handedly bringing bio medicine to the forefront of medicine. When we were first looking for natural ways to address what was going on with Grayson, I would see the word autism and turn around, change my path, just to come back to this dreaded word yet again. I kept saying, " but I don't get this, he's not autistic"....and no, he has never been diagnosed as being autistic, but why do I keep ending up here? Because it's working for kids of ALL degrees. Because it's basic biology people!! Remember, something as common as ADD is actually on the autism spectrum, and I repeat "spectrum".....there are all degrees of illness associated with this particular disorder. Label or no label, what it comes down to is there is a set of "symptoms" that come with the illness we are dealing with and whether they put your child on the spectrum or not is not what is important. What IS important is that you recognize these symptoms as something that needs attention. So is my child autistic? No, he's not. He's social beyond words, he's funny and he reads body language better than some adults I know, he is bright and very aware of his surroundings. Did he have symptoms of an autistic child? He sure did! He hand flapped, he started to loose eye contact at the worst of it (and still does when his health takes a turn for the worse), he has tantrums that aren't reasonable, he used to line up cars incessantly, he was and still sometimes is a sensory seeker (when his gut dysbiosis flares), he bounces off the walls and couches, he traces outlines of our cabinets with his hands, he has moments sometimes DAYS of being highly emotional....does any of this sound like it could be your kid? They sound like normal childhood behaviors, but what really is normal? Are we becoming accustomed to these behaviors over time, because they are more common and because the child isn't "autistic"? And when you clump all of these "behaviors" into one child, do they take on a different definition? Yes, they become symptoms of something that is very hard for parents to grasp. It's not necessarily autism, because what is going on inside of an autistic child's body can also go on inside of a neuro-typical child, which will then cause the very same symptoms that are often seen (to a more severe degree) in autistic children. I truly believe that the severely inflicted children who are at the far end of the autism spectrum are just the most fragile kids alive. Everyone handles things differently. Just think of how you handle a cold, your neighbor might have completely different symptoms with the same cold strain and allergies, you have one to mold and your cousin reacts to dogs, your child might react to milk!....These kids can't handle toxins, they cannot handle the pesticides, the heavy metals, the plastics, the cleaners and bleaches, the injections, the viruses, the EMFs, the radio frequencies, the chemicals in mattresses and fire retardant pajamas, the parabens in soaps and lotions and even TOOTHPASTES.....they are breathing, absorbing, eating....toxin after toxin and what is the one common thread they all have? More than 90% of these kids have low glutathione. This is a naturally occurring peptide in the body, a natural antioxidant. It drives our ability (or lack thereof) to detox these toxins that we encounter increasingly every day. You might be interested to know that Tylenol (our teething best friend at one point, right?) reduces glutathione. So a child who might have already been on the brink of low glutathione, give him or her Tylenol and you have just enabled his or her body to hold onto more toxins. Is it that simple, no it's not, there is a lot more that goes into this vast system, but this is one of the many things we are seeing more and more often with children these days. Do parents realize this when they reach for the Tylenol, because they just want their poor achy child to be comfy, no they don't! Do they realize that the reflux and ear infections are commonly from dairy allergies, probably not! Do they know that colic and loose stools often accompany gut dysbiosis and that their children probably need probiotics, I bet they don't!

So I am going on and on, and it's so easy to do once you get into the biology of it all, because it's all so connected, but my point is that every child could be effected to some degree. I see children in grocery stores and I think...."I wonder, if his parents know that those behaviors mean something more than "he's a boy". Having a child inflicted with a weak immune system that allowed him to accumulate more toxins than he can handle has made me hyper sensitive to those signs. They are universal and I believe that at some point, knowledge will expose the truth about our children's health. I honestly believe that we are at a state of emergency with our kids. If we don't start eating differently, cleaning our homes differently, reading the ingredients we put into our children's bodies, using water filters, washing produce, buying organic meats, we are going to see an incredible increase in autoimmune diseases in this generation and the generations to come. It is a documented fact that babies today are born with over 500 identifiable toxins already in their system, as tested in the umbilical cord fluids. So I encourage you, when you see a behavior that troubles you, or a rash that a doctor can't tie to an illness, or even a continuing sleep disturbance, consider this possibility. It's time to learn what we can do for our kids and their futures.

So now you are probably thinking, ok this is crazy, YOU Are crazy and what do we do about it anyway?! Well there are some really basic and simple things we can all start doing, like always washing your produce thoroughly, even thick skinned produce which will likely infect the protected inside when you slice through the dirty bacteria laden skins, you can shop organic as much as financially possible, you can clean with something as simple as vinegar and water, it's so safe you could drink it! And what about nutrients, get your kids tested for nutritional deficiencies, supplement with things like probiotics (always) and omega 3s. Switch to natural toothpastes without fluoride (you do NOT need fluoride for dental hygiene even though successful marketing schemes will have you believing that), replace your soaps, shampoos and lotions with natural and organic products to avoid the nasty chemicals our bodies don't know how to process (your skin is the largest organ of your body and you shouldn't apply anything to it that you wouldn't be able to eat), eat a healthy wholesome food diet and watch for reactions to foods (which isn't always easy since you can react up to FIVE days after ingesting a food), avoid ALL preservatives and colorings. If you can't pronounce an ingredient, avoid it! These things are simple, they take some time and thought, but the health of your child is a stake. If this doesn't fix the concerns you might have, keep searching for your answers. They don't call us Warrior Mothers for nothing!
